2009 - 2012 Free Watermelon

2012, More Utopia, Performance, London.

The performance took place inside Goldsmiths, London, when the history of the work started to allocate around other discourses on the history of the use of watermelon and connecting it to Black and African colonialism, imagining others as free savages. Then the watermelon performance this time was performed in front of audiences with less preparation than the original performance in 2009. And this time the artist Sherko Abbas accompanied me and documented the performance.

2009 Eat watermelon for free, Westfield, London.

In the same year, for the first time, I had a one-month residency in London with the organisation Art Role, Artsadmin, Live Art Development Agency. During the residency the artists from Live Art Agency sent letters as guidance for making public works in London, and during the residency I prepared one performance with the work watermelon but this time instead me eating it I cut it in circles and put them on a table in front the newly opened Westfield in London and Asked out loudly eat watermelon for free but the rule was no one had the right to cut the watermelon they had to eat it from the middle while the work was a struggle between desire and body boundaries, social norms and of course my elementary-level English and other politics regarding public space, because during the little time of the performance three time the security came to us asked us to leave as we were advised after the third time the, we had to leave because they had the right to take us to the police station. During the performance, the artist, Shabnam Shahbazi, accompanied me, documenting and helping.

2009 Going back to nature, Kanysard, Silemany.

: Going Back to Nature was the name of a TV program broadcast by Kurdsat TV and was hosted by the artist Esmail Hhh. The nature of the program was to take the artists to nature and record their painting of nature how realistically they paint nature, some in their style but converted to painting a nature that can be seen by camera and also then recording how the artist turns it to a painting, a drawing, watercolour, and other artistic materials. I remember criticising it on many occasions that this type of program reduces the imagination of normal people to the level that art is one style of painting, and that is realistic depiction of nature. The director of the program was a friend of mine; he once met me and said Why do you come to put your style in nature with the program, and I said If I come, my artwork won't be painting. " He said, " I promise whatever you did, we will include it in the program and will be broad casted.

As a challenge to the program and the Idea of one-directional imagination of art, I accepted and brought one watermelon to the program. During the day, I announced to the artist that I would now do a performance with the Idea of going back to nature. I started to cut the watermelon in half with a sharp stone and started to eat it without cutting it into more pieces. The audience were the artists who thought they were doing the best method of painting what they saw, because the director at Kurdsat TV never agreed to put the performance in the actual TV program.
